Last summer, news came of a new restaurant, La Villa, settling into the space adjacent to Mudgie's. Alas, it was not meant to be. This week, a new butcher paper sign was posted in the vacant shop.

"We recently acquired the space and we will be expanding into it in the near future," says Greg Mudge, owner of the Corktown deli.

A brief chat with Mudge reveals what is in store for Mudgie's 2.0. The additional space offers several advantages over the current location. For one, it will allow the current restaurant to offer outdoor seating. And it provides extra space needed to house the deli's carryout business.

Mudge notes that when the neighboring space became available three years ago, La Villa snapped up the lease before Mudgie's could make a bid for it, but as soon as it was freed up he jumped at the chance to expand. At the moment, there's no official timeline on the renovations.
