EASTERN MARKET — The Red Bull House of Art, an unusual and unusually popular icon of the Detroit art scene, is hosting another exhibition opening, and the MetroTimes is all over it. Their write-up, which includes takes on the corporate sponsorship angle, features a lovely quote from gallery curator Matt Eaton — "Detroit is just one of those places bristling with energy and filled with creativity with very little support for artists from the people in power." The opening is Friday, August 9. [MetroTimes]
MIDTOWN — While our feelings on Great Lakes Coffee are already pretty obvious, it's always nice when other folks from other places take note. The Coolist, a website focused on the worlds of design, luxury and creative industries, highlighted seven neat Detroit-based creative companies of the moment, including the Midtown "Institute for Advanced Drinking." The list is here, and the picks are pretty broad. [TheCoolist]
DOWNTOWN— While you might not be able to sneak in to the Baltimore's '>Low Winter Sun' viewing party this Sunday, you can definitely join the readers of Deadline Detroit in their helpful drinking game (those kids and their drinking games). The five-strong list in the game includes shots for local sports references (except the Lions, sadly) and drinks for any urban prairie or Packard Plant angles, of which we understand there are many. [DeadlineDetroit]
GREEKTOWN — County officials might still pretend in their heart of hearts that the scuttled Wayne County jail site could still be completed, but we're more interested in hearing what the prospects are for a huge mixed-use redevelopment plan that includes a Major League Soccer stadium. The County Commission hears plans from the many bidders next Wednesday. Our vote (which doesn't count) is for whatever plan builds the most apartments, adds that stadium and allows for new restaurants and bars on the East side of the downtown district. But that's just us, really. [MLive]
