No, that exclamation point is not a typo. The name of Midtown's latest eatery — Go! Sy Thai — hopes to highlight the restaurant's fast-casual dining concept from the moment customers walk by the corner space in the Auburn.
"It's a condensed menu, condensed down to suit our concept," said owner Cedric Lee in an interview with Eater Detroit. "But the food is identical to any of the other Sy Thais. The only thing we had to cut out was the more complex made to order stuff." There are Sy Thai restaurants in Birmingham, St. Clair Shores and Troy, and the new Detroit location arrives as the network nears its 20th anniversary later this summer. Unlike the more formal suburban restaurants, the Detroit location will also not have a liquor license, Lee said. "Alcohol didn't suit the feel of the place," he said.
While he's eagerly looking forward to the restaurant's soft opening, targeted for Wednesday of next week, Lee said that he's more excited about being a part of the Midtown neighborhood. "In the Birmingham location, I know maybe one of two of our neighbors there," Lee said. "But down here, everybody's been coming in, saying hi, welcoming us. It's a great feeling down here."
