Five Great Corktown Restaurants; Rock City Gets Some Press; First Freep Film Fest Announced

Photography by Chris and Michelle Gerard

CORKTOWN— The most recent Freep 5 features "Five Great Restaurants in you'll find in Corktown" (that aren't Slows). Looking for an undiscovered gem? Don't get excited. The list might be novel because it doesn't mention Bar-B-Q, but the choices (Mudgie's, Mercury Burger & Bar, Ottava Via, The Brooklyn Street Local, and St. CeCe's Pub) are nonetheless very safe, even if they're great. HAMTRAMCKRock City Eatery is walking a little taller after getting some press in the Hamtramck Review. It might not be the big leagues (they're still waiting for Sylvia Rector and Molly Abraham to come knocking) but it's a start, and positive press isn't something a new restaurant wants to turn down. DETROIT— It's been more than a year in the making, and it's still a few months away, but just yesterday the Detroit Free Press announced the first Freep Film Festival, which will take place in at the Fillmore and the DIA, and will feature about a dozen screenings in March, 2014. The theme for the festival? Detroit and its here and now. [Freep]
