As Corktown becomes a popular food and bar destination, 100 year-old fixture in the neighborhood PJ's Lager House is on the verge of closing its doors for good. The restaurant made a profit of just $1,000 last year, and owner Paul "PJ" Ryder is still working for free, six years after he opened the business.
The bar and restaurant is most popular as a live music venue, but on Yelp the food and drinks have solid reviews. Other Corktown restaurants and bars like Sugar House, Slows, and Mercury Burger & Bar often have waits, or even lines out the door, but PJ's isn't sharing their luck. If it wasn't for the dedication of his wife and friends, Ryder says he would have already thrown in the towel.
